Chris Sutton Hails Arsenal For Making “No Brainer” Addition That Could Help Them “Win The Premier League”

BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton believes Arsenal have made a shrewd decision to sign Jorginho from Chelsea.

While he is somewhat perplexed that his former club allowed the Italian to leave Stamford Bridge, he believes the midfielder could help the Gunners secure the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City:

“I’m surprised he’s gone to Arsenal and Chelsea are helping Arsenal. I think, from Arsenal’s point of view, he may be the signing which helps him win the Premier League. I think that he’s a really talented player. This looks like a compromise because they’re saying, ‘We’re not going to get Moises Caicedo and we’re not going to get Declan Rice in this window’.”

“At 31 it’s a good piece of business, for £12m it’s cheap as chips. From Arsenal’s point of view, that’s a 10/10. I really think that’s a no brainer and a smart piece of business.”

Jorginho had less than six months remaining on his contract at Chelsea, so bringing him for such a low fee was “smart”, as Sutton points out.

It will, though, be interesting to see where he fits into Mikel Arteta’s plans. The Spaniard was believed to be the driving force behind the decision to snap up Jorginho so he must have a good idea about which position he’ll be used in.

For Chelsea, he generally played as part of a midfield two, sitting as an anchor man to dictate play and pick out passes from deep. There is no equivalent role in Arsenal’s starting eleven.

Jorginho could be used further forward, as a potential alternative to Granit Xhaka, but it would be a surprise if he’s deployed in Thomas Partey’s role.
