‘This Is Not Decided Yet’ Arsenal Looking For New Defender Following Injury To Key Player

Following the long-term ACL injury suffered by Jurrien Timber in their opening game of the season against Nottingham Forest, Arsenal are in the hunt for another defender, according to Fabrizio Romano [via DeBrief Podcast].

Currently, the Gunners do not have a specific target in mind. They also do not know which position they need to strengthen, as Timber is equally proficient in both the right-back and centre-back roles.

A certain name was mentioned by Romano on the podcast – namely, Benjamin Pavard – but it is unclear as to whether Arsenal will make a move for him or not.

What did Romano have to say?

Speaking to the DeBrief Podcast, Romano said: “They’re [Arsenal] discussing about this [replacing Timber] internally. Arsenal are continuing this week to discuss, together with Mikel Arteta, to decide whether they want to sign a player on the market.

“This is not decided yet but they also have to decide if they want to sign a new centre-back or full-back. We know Timber was covering both positions so they have to decide what kind of player could be the right one.

“I think Arsenal will only act if they find a good opportunity. I don’t see them spending crazy money. I think they could do something smart as they always do on the market.

“Another player being discussed internally was Benjamin Pavard, but he is very close to joining Inter [Milan] at the moment. And I don’t think Arsenal were prepared to spend €30 million on a player who is out of contract next summer. Multiple players are on the table as options, let’s see what is going to happen with the internal discussions in the coming hours and days.”

Do Arsenal need to sign another defender?

With the injury sustained by Timber, it would benefit Arsenal greatly if they were to snap up a new right-sided defender – especially with a lengthy playing schedule on the horizon.

It is not an absolute priority, as Arsenal have a couple of players who can fulfil Timber’s role in the squad, but another injury to a defensive player could lead to a crisis.

Romano mentioned that ‘multiple’ players are being eyed up by the Gunners as the transfer window progresses – will they make a move before September 1?
