Wenger admits doubts over managing the club

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he “hesitated” over signing a new contract last season because he doubted his management capabilities and wondered if he was “capable of leading the club”.

The Frenchman agreed a two-year deal in May after leading the Gunners to the FA Cup. It was widely believed that the veteran would allow his contact to expire and leave the club with his head held high.

In a recent interview on French TV programme Telefoot, he said there were “personal reasons” behind the decision to delay extending his 21-year stay at the Gunners.

“I’ve been there for so long that you always wonder, can you still take the team to the next level?” said Wenger.

“I’ve been at Arsenal many years and last season we struggled a lot. This year we won our first game, we weren’t as good in the second match and then we had a catastrophic performance.”

“But now we have to recover and, as always in a time of crisis, you have to win your next game.”

After just 3 games into the new season, many fans are already calling for the manager’s head at Arsenal. This isn’t without good reason though, a 4-3 last gasp victory over Leicester was followed by bitterly disappointing losses to Stoke and Liverpool.

Many have speculated that the Frenchman has lost the dressing room, with many players wanting out, and some already forcing their way out during the transfer window.

Frustrations continued though, as the club’s deadline day deal for Thomas Lemar fell through – apparently because the player was reluctant to join the Gunners.

Should Wenger have called it a day at the end of last season? Are we in for another poor term of Arsenal displays? Or will the Frenchman turn it all around after what could be described as just a ‘bad start’.
