The Europa League Final Is A Fitting Sendoff For Arsenal Star Who Has Done It All

Four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, four Community Shields, the Champions League and the Europa League, Petr Cech has won the lot during his respective careers at Chelsea and Arsenal.

The 36-year-old is looking to go out in style with one more title when he lines up in goal for the Gunners against his former club in the Europa League Final in Baku later this month.

It will be a fitting end if he does lift a final trophy during his last game of professional football, and it is a testament to the man that he is well respected by both London clubs, despite the fierce rivalry that exists between the two groups of fans.

Cech’s Arsenal career hasn’t been as consistent as his Chelsea days but that was to be expected as his career has entered its final stages. Still, manager Unai Emery kept faith with him at the start of this season despite the £22.5m summer arrival of Bernd Leno from Leverkusen.

It was only a hamstring problem at the back end of September which relegated the veteran keeper to Europa League duties but, in some senses, it seems the injury could have worked out well for all parties.

The Arsenal supporters got to see a keeper in Leno maturing into his role, and establishing himself as one of the league’s top shot-stoppers over the course of the season.

For Cech, he has been given the chance of playing in the Europa League which has turned out to be the club’s only avenue for silverware this campaign.

Who knows what might have happened if he hadn’t got that injury? The Czech may have continued playing in the league and delayed his retirement plans, but perhaps he would have been sidelined after some underwhelming displays, we just don’t know.

In reality, Leno’s rise to prominence has allowed Cech to leave the field under the best possible circumstances. As he has said himself, he wants to exit football while he is still playing well, and playing for the Europa League is a fitting sendoff.

It’s weird how things turn out that he’ll be playing against his former side where he had so much success, and although his time at the Emirates hasn’t been as spectacular, he will nonetheless be equally appreciated by Arsenal fans when he calls it a day on May 29th.
