Substitute Blunder Could Have Cost Arsenal In Bayern Game

Arsenal made a miscalculation when it comes to Ryo Miyaichi who was unable to make the bench of 7 subs against Munich. The Gunners thought they could include the 21 year old Japanese winger in their Champions League squad which apparently was impossible due to UEFA regulations. It was a bit embarrassing for a club as big as the one from North London to bring a player who could not be featured in the game to Munich.

According to the Daily Mail, Wenger’s squad problems are the main reason for this mistake. That and poor administrative skills got Arsenal a lot of bad publicity, as this particular subject almost became more news-worthy than the Gunners’ performance against the German side.

The media had a laugh when finding out about Wenger’s unfortunate incident. It seems that Arsenal’s administration presumed Miyaichi is featured on the Gunners’ “B” list which would have granted him access to the Champions League.

Unfortunately for the Frenchman the club forgot about the Japanese international’s loan history. The 21 year old has performed for Feyenoord, Wigan and Bolton which means he has not spent the minimum amount of time at the Emirates, in order to be eligible for the alternative player list.

Arsenal’s mistake forced Wenger to register only six substitutes instead of the seven allowed. This particular blunder did not affect the game in any big way but it did leave the club with one less option to call upon in the match which had things turned out differently might have of had a bearing on the result.
