Should Arsenal Bid For Dortmund’s Hummels?

Arsenal’s transfer activity has surprisingly been conducted early with most areas of the pitch addressed. However, there is still need of a defensive enforcer and, as Vermaelen has decided to call it quits, a new central defender.

Metro has reported that Arsenal are set to rival Manchester United in order to secure Max Hummels’ signature. However, the Dortmund defender will cost the Gunners in the region of £30 million.

Such a hefty price tag for a defender who reportedly doesn’t want to leave Dortmund seems illogically high. What is even more absurd is that an amount like that is being thrown around for a back-up defender. There is also the notion that if you pay such a big fee, you are forced to reshuffle the pack and fit in the new signing.

But the pairing of Mertesacker and Koscielny seems sturdy. Or does Wenger feel he needs to break the partnership and spend big once again in this transfer market. Arsenal’s failings last season were more to do with the lack of forwards rather than the central defenders.

Do you think Arsenal should potentially break the Mertesacker and Koscielny partner and spend big on Hummels?
