Arsenal winger Willian was certainly not the only player to put in a woeful performance against Burnley last night but the Brazilian international’s poor form has become a lightning rod for criticism following the Gunners’ awful start to the season.
There was a lot of optimism when the 32-year-old was snapped up on a free transfer from Chelsea, with many believing he could add some experience in attacking areas.
However, despite a promising debut against Fulham, Willian has flattered to deceive, putting in a succession of below-par displays with many fans on Twitter now asking why manager Mikel Arteta keeps selecting ahead of the likes of Reiss Nelson:
Willian has been shocking since that Fulham game, Christ

Willian is not a winger anymore.. Think he should play in midfield with Nelson down the flank

Can someone tell me what Willian does in this team?

He forgot how to dribble. His focus is only on how to run his restaurant. Esr should be subbed on.

Our right side should be Nelson – Cedric. Willian and Bellerin are both useless.

With Nicolas Pepe returning from suspension when Arsenal face Southampton on Wednesday, it will be hoped that Willian is taken out of the side and replaced by the Ivorian. Although the club’s record signing does blow hot and cold, he can certainly offer a lot more than his Brazilian teammate at the moment.
