Arsenal should not be contemplating a move for Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix, according to ESPN pundit Steve Nicol.

The Gunners have been linked with the Portuguese international in recent weeks as they scour the market for a potential replacement for Gabriel Jesus. However, Nicol believes the 23-year-old’s best position is as a number 10, which is currently filled by club captain Martin Odegaard, and his arrival at the Emirates could upset the balance in the squad:

“I don’t think Odegaard will be too happy with it if he appeared. No, it doesn’t seem the right fit. I like what they’ve got going now. It’s unfortunate Jesus is injured. But the whole thing they’ve got going now seems right – Joao Felix coming in could blow that up a little bit.”

Nicol makes a fair point. Felix is by no means an out-and-out striker and he is a very different player to Jesus. While he is a top talent, you can’t see Arsenal splashing out a club record £88m to secure his signature.

Other Premier League teams, including Chelsea and Manchester United, have also been mentioned as potential suitors, but Paris Saint-Germain does seem like the likeliest destination if Felix does leave Atletico when the transfer window reopens in January.
