Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira, according to Mundo Deportivo. 

Manager Diego Simeone is a big admirer of the Uruguayan and was keen on snapping up the player before he moved to the Emirates from Sampdoria two years ago.

With Torreira now expected to be offloaded this summer, Atletico are now weighing up whether to make an offer for the 24-year-old. This could well hand the Gunners an opening in their pursuit of Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian is Mikel Arteta side’s top target this summer but they are unable to match the player’s €50m (£45m) release clause.

However, they could consider using Torreira as a possible makeweight in the deal. One issue that might arise is the fact that the Uruguayan international is more interested in a return to Italy.

AC Milan and Fiorentina are believed to be keen on the player but it would be a surprise if the midfielder turned down the chance of working under Simeone.
