James McNicholas Pinpoints “Frustrating” Reason That Could Be Stopping 4 Key Arsenal Stars From Signing New Contracts

Arsenal’s process for offering new contracts is slowing down attempts to tie down key players for the long term, according to The Athletic journalist James McNicholas.

Most teams give their chief executives some leeway when negotiating contracts with agents but, with the Gunners, every proposal submitted has to be approved by the board first.

There are benefits to how Arsenal do their business, as it means the club have oversight over the wage bill, but McNicholas says it can lead to negotiations being a “frustrating” experience, particularly for the representatives of players who are used to more streamlined approaches at other Premier League teams.

It does, however, explain why Bukayo Saka has been in discussions with the club over an extension for the best part of a year.

Both Saka and William Saliba’s deals expire in 2024 so those are the most urgent to get resolved, but talks are also being held with Gabriel Martinelli and Aaron Ramsdale.
