Is Ozil The Key To This Year’s PL Title?

The German international is closing in on Thierry Henry’s 20 assist record set back in 2003. He is also 2 assists away from Fabregas and Lampard who are now 2nd in the All-time assist rankings. Even though it is impressive to see these numbers, it is better to know that what Ozil does can help the Gunners win the title. The 27-year-old has returned to the form that got him to 81 assists in 159 games for Real Madrid and is looking better with each game. His performance against Borunemouth was a perfect example of how the German could win a game for Arsenal just as Sanchez can. Wenger knew what he was doing when signing the two even if Ozil was heavily criticized during the end of last season. Apparently he just needed time to acclimatise and get to know his colleagues.

Ozil’s form should be leading Arsenal to their first title since 2004. The Gunners will end 2015 in 1st place on goal difference thanks to Ozil who has become an unexpected leader for Wenger’s side. It has been pointed out on several occasions that during the past couple of seasons, Arsenal have been missing a leading man on the pitch, a player that could orchestrate the team just as Pires and Vieira did the last time Arsenal won the Premier League. Sure, they also had Henry back then who scored 30 goals but Giroud, Sanchez and Walcott could round up similar numbers if they stay fit for the rest of the season.

Getting back to Ozil’s numbers, it is safe to say that Henry’s record will fall by May. If the midfielder stays fit and avoids getting injured, he will surely set an incredible record for the next player who wants to become an assist leader. It is a pity that Wilshere, Cazorla and Sanchez were not on the pitch at the same time as Ozil the entire season. The Chilean’s presence would surely have improved Ozil’s record while Wilshere and Cazorla would have created a lot more space for the German to showcase his abilities. Regardless of Arsenal’s formation, the 27-year-old is still the man to watch and probably thank if the Gunners get the title.
