International Break Should Allow Wenger And Players To Prepare For The Season Run-In

With everything going on at Arsenal surrounding the future of manager Arsene Wenger, with reports increasingly suggesting that the Frenchman will agree a year’s extension at the club, it could be easy for all those involved to be swallowed up in the circus surrounding the club.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done this season and the playing staff, more than ever, need to finally step up and show that maturity which Wenger claimed was more present than ever at the start of the season.

Whilst the club have told their manager to use this international break as a period to reflect and make his decision, something it appears the former Monaco boss has already done, the rest of the club need to be using their time wisely.

Many of the first team will this week be off with their national sides, however, there still remain enough that these two weeks can have a profound effect on this season’s run-in.

The Gunners have an FA Cup semi-final with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to navigate, alongside the increasingly tough battle to maintain their top four record and secure Champions League football next season.

The most recent reports surrounding Wenger suggest a sudden reinvention could be his answer to landing silverware next season, with a big money overhaul tipped for this coming summer, however, all of that planning and budgeting will be for nothing if the current crop miss out on that top four.

Wenger may be happy to keep the media and fans waiting on a decision, however, if the north Londoners are going to be in a position to really succeed next season, he must be concise and honest with his players, tell them of his decision during this break and tell them to accept it, either way, and work towards their goals together.

With the run since the turn of the year, the players and management have taken what could have been a successful campaign and turned it into a memorable one for all the wrong reasons. The running jokes of the same thing happening to Arsenal year on year have far exaggerated beyond their normal levels this time around.

In order to avoid any more of that once domestic football returns in April, the squad need to be told straight what is happening, and what is expected of them between now and their holidays.

It is always hard for managers to keep their squad going during breaks such as these, however, Wenger can use this timely break to begin that reinvention sooner rather than later.
