Former Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon has praised the performance of Lucas Torreira in the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Chelsea yesterday afternoon.
The Uruguayan international hasn’t always been at this best this season, but the midfielder provided a good deal of protection to the team’s backline, and Dixon feels it was his best he has seen him play in an Arsenal shirt:
Lots better shape today for @Arsenal Defence had some protection for an hour. Torriera was everywhere?? best I’ve seen him play. Goalkeeping mistake unusual. Then a ‘revert to type’ goal conceded very disappointing. Hope Chambers is not too bad

Torreira has been played out of position on occasion this campaign, playing further up the field, but manager Mikel Arteta played him in his favoured holding midfield role in the London derby.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Emirates, with the likes of Napoli and AC Milan said to be keen on recruiting the Uruguayan, but his recent form will likely strengthen the Gunners’ resolve to keep him in the January transfer window.
Especially with Granit Xhaka expected to depart, the London club will need Torreira to play a key role in the second half of the season.
