Disastrous Defensive Display Costs Arsenal Dearly Against Bayern Munich

There is little to say after losing 5-1 against any team. Arsenal is a big-time club so the fact that Bayern Munich were the ones to score that many goals should not be an excuse. The Germans deserved the victory with their impressive offensive display and they likely would have still won even if the Gunners had not lacked the required kind of defensive organisation and commitment needed to stop them. Apart from Giroud and Sanchez who are in top shape, many of the other players looked like they were beaten from the word go. The right side of the squad was non-existent until the 80th minute when Debuchy managed a decent tackle on Robben. Apart from what happened in the last 10 minutes, there is not much to comment on the way Campbell and the French right-back performed. Bellerin and Walcott or Oxlade-Chamberlain really matter, and not having them in the team caused the side a great deal of problems. Cazorla is another player who had a bad day.  Nothing seemed to come off for the tricky Spaniard and he looked relieved when he was finally subbed in the 87th minute although why Wenger even bothered with 3 minutes left is hard to figure.

Even with a few decent chances created in the second half plus a wonderful goal by Giroud, Arsenal still disappointed. There was no leader on the pitch to motivate the team and there were no players to try and rally the troops to come back against the 3 goal difference with the 20 minutes left in the game after Giroud’s strike. Not having players like Walcott, Ramsey, Wilshere and Bellerin is apparently having a big impact on the squad’s performance. When talking about the team’s display vs Bayern in the post match press conference, Wenger said that the Gunners “…made it quite easy for them with our defensive performance…” and that simply “…we were not at the races…”

So Wenger has a few days to get the squad focused for the Derby on Sunday and we learned from the boss that Bellerin will not be available on Sunday and Koscielny has only a small chance of being passed fit. Well a small chance is better than no chance as the French defender would certainly be welcomed back into the side to face Spurs in what will be a contest between the 2nd and 5th placed teams.
