Campbell Believes Aubameyang Will Only Stay At Arsenal On One Condition

Former Arsenal centre-back Sol Campbell says Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will only sign a contract extension if he is given assurances about the club’s spending in the transfer market.

The London club are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League next season and investment is required in the squad to get the team back challenging at the top end of the table.

Campbell believes that Aubameyang’s age will play a part in whether he commits his future to Arsenal, as he will want to be challenging for honours very soon:

“He’s got to settle down and have a conversation with the manager and he needs to have a clear understanding of what they’re looking to spend, who they’re trying to get in”

“It’s going to come down to trust, can he trust the club to say, ‘right we are looking for x, y and z, we’re going to bring two or three players in’ and I think they’ll push us on to really challenge for the top four, or really you never know [with] the Premiership.”

“He needs to sit down with his people and have a serious conversation about where the club is going in the next two or three years because he hasn’t got five years, six years to say let’s see how it goes, he needs almost instant success now.”

Aubameyang has hinted that he will put pen to paper on a new deal during a Q&A on Instagram Live, but there are said to be other obstacles that could prevent him from signing on the dotted line.

There are claims that the 31-year-old is asking for a £250,000 a week, three-year contract, and it remains to be seen whether the Gunners will agree to those demands in the current financial climate.
