Arteta Lays Out Arsenal’s Transfer Stance On Signing Midfield Duo

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has effectively ruled out approaches to sign either Jack Wilshere and Sheffield United’s Sander Berge.

The two midfielders have been mentioned as possible targets in recent days but it looks as though neither player will be making the switch to the Emirates in the coming weeks. On Wilshere, Arteta said the former West Ham player is not someone who is being looked at:

“We haven’t analysed that situation. What I can tell you about Jack is what I’ve said in the past, as a player, as a teammate and as a person I rate him really, really highly. Unfortunately, at the moment we haven’t looked at that. We are focused on the players we have and we’re trying to do the best we can with them.”

The situation with Berge is slightly different. Arteta’s assistant Albert Stuivenberg is a big fan of the player but the Gunners boss said that is far as it goes in terms of the club’s interest in snapping up the Norwegian international.

Undoubtedly, Arsenal will be looking at the midfield department in the January transfer window, with the club currently desperately short of creative players. The likes of Red Bull Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar are believed to be top of Arteta’s shortlist of targets.
