Arsenal are keeping tabs on Napoli forward Dries Mertens, according to reports in the Italian media. The Belgian international is available on a free transfer in the summer when his contract expires.
The Gunners were monitoring the 32-year-old’s situation before Mikel Arteta‘s arrival, but it is believed they could step up their pursuit of the striker now the Spaniard has been appointed.
Mertens is said to be a player who would fit into Arteta’s style of play and the Belgian is apparently very keen on a move to the Premier League.
However, there are clubs in Italy who are also interested in recruiting the forward. Inter Milan, Roma, Lazio and Juventus are all said to be targeting the player.
Roma and Inter, in particular, could look to offer a part-exchange deal for Mertens in January but it appears more likely that he’ll depart at the end of his current deal in June.
