The Gunners are woefully short in defence and they are in desperate need of reinforcements in the winter transfer window. Injuries to Laurient Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy highlighted the lack of depth in defence and Wenger is planning to address that issue in January.

The north London side are preparing an £8 million bid for Netherlands World Cup star and Villa defender Ron Vlaar, according to the Express. The 29-year-old is also a target for his former Dutch boss Louis van Gaal, who has his own injury problems to contend with at Manchester United.

The Villans do not want to lose their captain but talks over a new deal have yet to bear fruit. Vlaar’s contract expires next summer and he will be free to talk to rival clubs as soon as January.
