Arsenal Player Ratings vs West Ham

Arsenal kicked off their new season with a 2-0 defeat to West Ham. The Gunners looked lax throughout the game, and despite having over 20 attempts on goal it never seemed as if West Ham were massively troubled.

Petr Cech endured a miserable Premier League debut for Arsenal as the goalkeeper conceded 2 goals which could’ve largely been avoided on his part. The goalkeeper, who signed from Chelsea this summer, was at fault for both goals as Slaven Bilic’s side ended an eight-year wait for a win over their London rivals.

West Ham opened the scoring minutes before half time through Kouyate’s header. But the Czech keeper made a big error of judgment by trying to punch clear a Payet free-kick from the right, only for the Hammers’ No 8 to head into an empty net.

The Hammers then doubled their lead after half time through Zarate’s strike, beating Cech at his near post. The task became ever greater for Arsenal as time moved on, so much so that Wenger was forced into sending on Alecis Sanchez, a player he wanted to rest.

Credit must be given to West Ham, who played a brilliant game. Bilic’s side certainly look much sharper than they have for a long time. 16-year-old Reece Oxford, who started the game for the Hammers, also impressed massively upon becoming the Premier League’s second youngest player. There’s definitely a rising star in there ranks.
