Arsenal Not Ready To Spend £31.3million On A Defender

Wenger has found a great solution to solve Arsenal’s problems within the defense. After The Gunners were heavily linked to Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, it seems that the transfer fell through. According to Metro, £31.3million is too much for the Emirates side who are not yet ready to pay that much for a defender regardless of his name or quality. Instead of spending all the transfer budget on a single center back, Arsenal will redirect their funds towards younger, more affordable players. The latest youngster to make the wanted list is Aymeric Laporte who has great potential of becoming a team regular. The 20 year old who can play as both a left back and as a central defender, is under contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2018.

The young Frenchman has had an impressive increase in both price and quality. Over the past year he has tripled in value and has delivered some very solid performances. Currently a member of France’s U21 youth team, Laporte looks like he will make the step to the big team sometime next year. With 71 appearances for Bilbao, the youngster is already experienced and could become a perfect replacement for Vermaelen who has left a huge gap in Arsenal’s squad.

Laporte is currently valued at £10million which is something Wenger might approve of. With a price tag three times cheaper than Hummels, and with a promising career in front of him, the 20 year old looks like a great investment to make during the winter transfer period.
