Arsenal defender Gabriel scored Brazil’s opener in their 1-1 draw against Venezuela on Thursday night.
The 25-year-old headed in a corner at the near post following a whipped cross into the box from Neymar.
Despite performing well for the Gunners over the last couple of years, Gabriel’s appearance versus Venezuela was only the third for his country.
Since Fernando Diniz became caretaker manager, following the dismissal of Tite after the last World Cup, Gabriel has risen to prominence at international level.
The centre-back wasn’t selected for friendlies back in March or June but he has been a starter since World Cup qualifiers began last month.
Gabriel made his debut in the 5-1 win over Bolivia in September, and he also played in the 1-0 victory against Peru 4 days later. After scoring versus Venezuela, he is likely to keep his place when Brazil take on Uruguay next week.
Gaining international recognition after some fine displays for Arsenal
It’s been a rollercoaster start to the season for Gabriel. While he was named in the starting lineup for the Community Shield, he was dropped by manager Mikel Arteta for the opening 3 league matches.
However, after regaining his spot for the 3-1 win against Manchester United, he hasn’t looked back, reuniting with William Saliba and forming what is arguably the strongest centre-back partnership in the Premier League. He is more than deserving of his call-ups for Brazil.
Another Arsenal star also played against Venezuela
Gabriel Jesus started on the bench for Brazil but he did replace Richarlison on the hour mark. The forward couldn’t, though, help secure the 3 points, as Venezuela managed to get a late equaliser.
Despite being fit, Gabriel Martinelli is not in Brazil’s squad. The forward played the second 45 minutes against Manchester City, scoring the winner, but he needs to be rested after only just recovering from a hamstring injury.
