Arsenal May Be Looking To Add This Quality Young Left-Back

With everything that has happened at Arsenal in the last couple of months, with the Champions League exit and loss of form in the Premier League, a lot of smaller issues surrounding the long-term future of the squad have been overlooked somewhat.

With Arsene Wenger constantly berated for his lack of spending the club went out in the summer and made big money additions in Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Perez, however, one area of the side in need of investment was ignored.

Whilst the manager added some mettle to his central pairing with Mustafi, the full-back slots could do with improvement. On the right there is no questioning the place of Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard, who signed a new long-term deal earlier this season, has excelled since breaking into the Gunners first team and has not looked back.

However, on the other flank, Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs have been exchanging the first choice slot during the season, with neither really being recognised as truly world class.

Whilst the full-back is perhaps not the most glamourous, or some may argue important, area to be investing in over the summer, it can make a profound difference over the season.

You only need to look across north London to see what the unparralled pair of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose have done for Mauricio Pochettino and his Tottenham side over the last season and a half.

Furthermore, the duo of Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand at the Gunners new-found bogey team, Southampton, have aided Claude Puel more than many, mucking in at the back with the choice of centre-halves severely depleted, whilst also offering so much going forward. Bertrand even scored at The Emirates earlier in the season as the Saints won 2-0 in the EFL Cup tie on their way to the final.

Therefore, with the Gunners looking to break back into the highest spots in English football and battle for the top prizes at home and on the continent once again, it may be high time for Wenger to start looking elsewhere, if only to give his existing pair a kick up the backside.

One full-back who has constantly been linked is Celtic youngster, Kieran Tierney. The 19-year-old has been an integral part of the Celtic side that has effectively won the Scottish Premiership this season, with an ankle ligament injury back in October his only spell out of the team since the start of the campaign.

The left-back was once again impressive in their 1-1 draw with Rangers in the Old Firm derby on Sunday in what was his 65th appearance for the Scottish giants, which is an incredible tally given that he is only 19, and only made his senior debut 23 months ago.

With that amount of experience under his belt already, which includes 13 games in European competition, three of which came in this season’s Champions League, Tierney is clearly developing a maturity beyond his years, which was evident in his fine display against Manchester City in the competition earlier this term.

It does, of course, take a lot more to achieve a spot in the Arsenal side than it does Celtic’s, however, with a bright future ahead of him, the Scotsman may well be the perfect fit to provide a quality option now but also for a long time to come.
