Arsenal Lack Winning Mentality

Arsenal Lack Winning Mentality

Arsenal began the summer with an impressive pre-season. The Gunners won the Asia cup, Emirates cup and the Community Shield. The highlight of pre-season was without a doubt the 6-0 win over Lyon, something that gave Arsenal continual hope of securing the Barclays Premier League.

Arsenal have been touted by many as serious title contenders for Chelsea this season, despite their lack of summer transfers. However, this summers arrival of Cech, last years deal for Sanchez and 2013’s signing of Mesut Ozil shows just what Arsenal are all about – they can attract the biggest stars and win trophies. It has to be said, Wenger’s sudden acceptance in buying big stars has had a large contribution to their recent success with trophy success.

Injuries in the past have prevented Arsenal from being serious title contenders, but the current squad is at its most able in years and the pure depth of the team means that a serious injury (Jack Wilshere’s) doesn’t massively affect the teams chances, as it would in the past. But although the squad is growing in ability and depth, it doesn’t seem like Arsenal are progressing as a club in terms of winning mentality.

The loss to West Ham last weekend proves that they are still the same Arsenal that we all know, and despise! The sort of side that lacks a real gutsy performance to fight back when they go behind. Another good example is the Champions League perfomance against Monaco last season. Losing 3-1 at Emirates stadium to a side they were well capable of beating. This needs to change in order to progress, but the question is, will Arsenal ever change their mentality under Arsene Wenger?
