Arsenal Begin Talks With Brazilian Defender

Arsenal have begun talks with Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista over a potential January move, after the centre back has been performing exceptionally well for the Spanish outfit this season and has attracted interest from several clubs around Europe, according to the Guardian.

The Gunners are on the back of a fabulous victory against Manchester City in an enthralling encounter at the Etihad Stadium, and that has given the club a massive lift in times when many experts doubted their abilities to face teams like City and Chelsea. Arsene Wenger has been under tremendous pressure from the supporters to strengthen the defensive side of the team, and especially the defensive midfield position which has troubled the side on various occasions. However, their performance against City saw a disciplined side to Wenger’s team, something supporters were astounded to witness. After the first goal, the side defended well, and stabilised the game, before slotting in the second to seal the game.

Gabriel began his career with South American club Vitoria as a youth player, and after developing his game in the academy, signed for senior side in 2010. The 24-year old played for Vitoria on 77 occasions in the local league, scoring one goal. In 2013, Villarreal scouted the Brazilian defender, and after agreeing personal terms and international clearances, signed him on a five-year contract. Gabriel Paulista has made 31 appearances for the club since his move, and is a crucial part of the setup. Arsenal are going to have to work their magic to sign the Brazilian as Man Utd are also apparently very interested in him.
