Arsenal icon slams decision to sell Olivier Giroud

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has slammed his former side’s decision to sell striker Olivier Giroud to Chelsea, saying “it would be like losing a tenner and finding a fiver”.

Giroud was allowed to make the switch across London after the Gunners completed the deadline day signing of Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a club record deal.

The Frenchman had long been rumoured to be on his way out of The Emirates after stating his desire for more first team action ahead of the World Cup this summer – however Wright was surprised to see him sold to one of the club’s biggest rivals – if not at all.

“Why would they sell him? It doesn’t make sense.” said Wright.

“It really would be like lose a tenner, find a fiver. So we’ve got (Alexandre) Lacazette and fingers crossed Aubameyang and no big guy on the bench.

“You are talking about bringing on Danny Welbeck, or if Lacazette’s not playing then him,” Wright added, “We haven’t got that guy that’s proven off the bench to come on and score goals.”

Giroud made is final appearance for the Gunners on Monday night, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 defeat to Swansea.

He was however unable to add to his total of 105 strikes as an Arsenal player before making the switch to Stamford Bridge – and Wright believes what is Arsenal’s loss is certainly Chelsea’s gain.

“I think Giroud in respect of value for money and the fact that he’s somebody that we know scores in this league,” he said.

“The plan B for Chelsea I think will work with him coming in.”
