Wright Backs Arsenal Summer Signing To Get First Start After Excellent Newcastle Performance

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has credited midfielder Lucas Torreira as being the major catalyst behind the Gunners’ improved second-half display against Newcastle.

The Uruguayan international came on for Mateo Guendouzi at halftime in the 2-1 win on Saturday, and the BBC pundit thought the midfielder’s forward passing played a crucial part in securing victory:

“I am delighted for Torreira because he wants to get the ball forward he wants to attack and get players forward that can help hurt the opposition. That’s why I wanted him to play [from the start].”

Many fans have been calling on manager Unai Emery to start the 22-year-old due to his excellent performances coming off the bench, and he showed that he could provide some much needed forward impetus during the second half at St James’ Park.

Goals from Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil put Arsenal 2-0 up after the interval, but the London club couldn’t hold on to their first clean sheet of the season with Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark getting one back in the closing stages of the match.

The Gunners’ next fixture is against Vorskla in a Europa League group stage match at the Emirates on Thursday evening.
