World Cup star reveals he is close to Arsenal transfer

Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira has confirmed he is close to completing his long-awaited transfer to Arsenal this summer.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder displayed exactly why Arsenal have been chasing him during the World Cup, playing a key role in the South American side’s route to the quarter-finals before their exit against France on Friday.

It is believed that the Gunners agreed a deal with Sampdoria during the group stages of the World Cup, worth around £26m, but were unable to complete the deal until the Uruguayan was eliminated from the tournament last week.

And on Sunday, the player himself admitted that he was on his way to London to finalise the deal rather than return to Uruguay.

He told Telenoche: “I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my team-mates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it.”

Torreira will become Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer so far, with the Gunners already landing goalkeeper Bernd Leno, defender Stephan Lichtsteiner and Soktratis Papasthathopoulous.

Arsenal are also said to be close to agreeing a deal for France U20 international Matteo Guendouzi.
