Wilshere Suggests Surprise Successor To Koscielny As Arsenal Captain

Former Arsenal player Jack Wilshere believes defender Rob Holding has what it takes to be a future captain of the Gunners.

The West Ham midfielder was asked about Holding’s qualities, and when talking about the centre-half, Wilshere said:

“Rob Holding was playing so well before he got injured and will be a great addition to their defence once he’s fit again. I really think he could be a potential Arsenal captain of the future.”

With Laurent Koscielny having refused to tour the United States following reports that he has been offered the chance to return to France, a new captain will be needed.

Hector Bellerin would be the prime candidate considering his experience and his age, but Holding would be a bold choice if manager Unai Emery wants to make a statement about his future plans for the club.

The 23-year-old showed huge promise before his injury and the Gunners boss may believe he can build a team around him. However, he has only played 60 games for the club, and his leadership qualities are unknown.

Emery may opt for a player with a previous track record. Granit Xhaka is captain of Switzerland but his below-par performances in an Arsenal shirt would not necessarily make him a popular choice with fans.

Sokratis could be another alternative, but he would be a short term solution, leaving someone like Bellerin the likeliest successor to Koscielny.
