Willian Contrasts Mikel Arteta’s “Very Different” Managerial Style To Frank Lampard

Arsenal winger Willian says there is next to no similarity between Gunners boss Mikel Arteta and Chelsea manager Frank Lampard in terms of their style of management.

The Brazilian worked for one season under Lampard and has been under Arteta’s guidance for the past four months so he does have a fair amount of insight to compare their two approaches.

Willian feels Arteta focuses heavily on tactical work on the training pitch, which is not how Lampard goes about things:

“Their football philosophies are very different. Perhaps the only similarity is that they’re young managers with a bright future ahead of them The way they look at the game isn’t similar. Mikel is more obsessed about the tactical aspects of football. He has a great understanding of the tactical side and dedicates a lot of time to it during his training sessions. Frank obviously works on his tactics as well, but in a different way.”

It is not a surprising comparison from Willian. Arteta has worked exclusively under Pep Guardiola as a coach and has taken on some of the detailed match planning that his fellow Spaniard is known for.

In contrast, Lampard went straight into management and has likely taken inspiration from a number of different managers he has played for, including the likes of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, who see the game quite differently to Guardiola.
