Why Signing This German International May Be Crucial For Arsenal?

Even though Arsenal are definite title contenders and their Champions League group stage campaign was a success, there is still some small doubt regarding their ability to secure major trophies. With that kind of insecurity, come all sorts of rumors including those that big names like Sanchez and Ozil may not be interested in extending their Emirates deal. While the actual rumors may be quite exaggerated, there will always be doubt surrounding the North London when it comes to contract extensions as seen in previous years. It was the same with Walcott and several others who took their time before putting pen on paper.

One way of speeding things up and helping players such as Sanchez and Ozil to commit to the club would be to continue investing in world class players and/or to win a major trophy such as the Premier League title or the Champions League. While it is extremely hard to make big moves in January as most tend to wait until the summer, there is a small chance the Frenchman could bring in someone whose presence definitely shows Arsenal mean business. That player is Julian Draxler who despite losing some of his flair after leaving Schalke, still represents a great future in football. The 23-year-old is not only a big name to sign but is also a close friend of Ozil’s. He would have the benefit of being surrounded by colleagues from Germany’s national team and would also have the benefit of actually playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. The first benefit would also be helping Ozil who needs to feel comfortable above all other things. Having his fellow compatriot around would help even more even though he already has Mustafi and Mertesacker. According to the The Express Wenger is willing to offer up to £30 million for Wolfsburg’s player.

If Draxler does come to the Emirates, he will most likely have to compete with Iwobi for a place on the left side of the attack. The German international has played a big part of his career on the left flank and would benefit from the excellent relationship he has with Ozil. Perhaps most importantly Draxler has fallen out with the powers-that-be at Wolfsburg so the club is ready to sell him in the upcoming winter transfer window. It would be better to see Wenger add another wide attacking option by investing in Draxler rather than bringing a central attacker or a midfielder or even a defender where Arsenal seem to have enough depth in those areas. Making a big signing in the winter window is not something Arsenal usually do so maybe this way Sanchez and Ozil will be satisfied and will understand that Wenger really does mean business. Of course the best way to secure existing players to new contracts and to attract more top players is to win the Premier League or the Champions League – simple enough really isn’t it?
