Why Arsenal Fans Haven’t Seen The Best Of Unai Emery Just Yet

There is a lot of consternation surrounding the lack of signings Arsenal have made so far this summer, and while there is a justifiable cause for concern that the club won’t improve their squad to the extent needed, there is one fact fans are missing.

Manager Unai Emery is not a manager who tends to have an instant impact on the clubs he manages. He even missed out on a league title to Monaco in his first season in charge at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spaniard’s methods and tactics do take time to take root, and this is something that is borne out if we look at the win percentages at three of his previous clubs.

At PSG, he finished second on 87 points during his first season in charge at the Ligue One club. He won the French Cup, League and Super Cup, and he had a win ratio of 73.6%. In his second season, that went up to 78.9% as his team won the league and cup double.

It is a pattern that was even more marked at Sevilla. He took over in January 2013 so we have taken his win percentage from his first full season in charge.

During the 13/14 campaign, he won his first of three Europa League titles, with a win rate of 52.5% in all competitions. By the time he had won his second European trophy with Sevilla, that percentage had increased to an impressive 65%.

The same improvement in the second campaign happened in Valencia too, although it must be said that there was only a 2% difference between the 08/09 season and the 09/10 campaign.

On average, however, Emery’s win ratio increases by about 6.6% during his second season in charge at a club. With Arsenal, that would see him improve from 60.3% in his first year to about 67% next season.

Of course. there are a lot of other variables in play here. Arsenal play in a more competitive league than in France or Spain, but what it does show is Emery’s staying power as a coach.

Some managers can have an instant impact on their players, and see performances drop from then on. With the Spaniard, it seems he needs that time on the training pitch to really get a team playing how he wants.

Hopefully, Arsenal will see Emery’s work bare fruit once again during his second season at the club.
