Who Will Wenger Sign To Fill Their Defensive Gap?

Despite Arsenal’s amazing win over Manchester City, it’s still pretty scary to think of what will happen when the Premier League games start. Wenger’s lot is once more affected by injury with Gabriel being the latest to fall. The Brazilian center-back who after Mertesacker and Koscielny’s injuries, remained the key defender for the Gunners, will be ruled out for the next two months. This means Chambers and Holding are the only options for the next couple of matches which is not the ideal scenario given the transfers that were made by other clubs. Even though having a defensive line that without Monreal averages 21 years of age would be great, it`s hard to believe they will hold up just well as the team regulars through the entire season.

The defense’s current situation pushes Wenger into making a transfer that he was not too keen on making. Recent reports quoted the Frenchman when saying he spends the club’s money as If they were his own so it is very likely that Arsenal’s new defender will be one of the two we will look into below:

  1. Jonny Evans – This former Manchester United defender has been linked to the Gunners several times during the past two weeks. According to the Mirror, this very unexpected move could go down this weekend or even earlier as Arsenal are in desperate need of reinforcements. Evans joined WBA last year but the opportunity to return to the Champions League might make him move to the Emirates just a year since leaving United. Fans did not take well to this rumor as Evans is no Mustafi. The German International was seen as the perfect fit for the Gunners’ defense even before Paulista picked up the injury. The 24-year-old has a £42million which Wenger is definitely not going to pay. Valencia are not willing to settle for less as there is no pressure from the player to leave. To be fair, even with all of Evans’ experience, he does not compare to the quality Mustafi would bring.
  2. Lukas Klostermann – The Germany U21 international has emerged as a late target for Arsenal who were never linked to this very versatile defender who most say, is very similar to Holding and also Mertesacker. He is featured as a right-back for RB Leipzig but he looks like a decent option for the center as well. It would not be much of a difference to have him play instead of Holding.

Here is a list of other possible targets who should be on Wenger’s list but are very unlikely to join the Gunners this week: Winston Reid (West Ham); Jonathan Tah (Bayern Leverkusen); Stefan de Vrij (Lazio).
