PSV have a youth team that plays in the second tier of Dutch football, and Gakpo was handed his first senior appearance at that level in November 2016.
While it did take the winger some time to make a name for himself, by the end of the 2018/19 season, he had progressed to becoming a regular member of PSV’s first-team setup under manager Mark van Bommel.
