What Does The Man City Win Mean For Arsenal?

A lot is being made of Arsenal’s summer becoming a disaster in the transfer market, as the Arsenal fans were filled with so much promise once last season ended when it was revealed that the club possessed a massive £70 million in the bank and manager Arsene Wenger was willing to finally spend big, if any quality player became available.

They were initially linked to the likes of Stevan Jovetic, Gonzalo Higuain, Marouane Fellaini, Wayne Rooney and now Luis Suarez; and considering Arsenal’s healthy financial position this time around, any of these deals materializing was very well within the realms of possibilities. The harsh truth however is, that none of them have happened thus far.

These players have either decided to join other clubs, or have been forcefully tied down by their current respective clubs who have rejected Arsenal’s advances. The only player to have joined Arsenal this summer remains little known youngster Yaya Sanogo, while the list of outgoing players just keeps on increasing. The Gunners have been reduced to the bare minimum in terms of depth in squad.

It is crystal clear that they need to bring in new players, not just to make up the numbers but to also add to the quality currently at the club and to help push towards that elusive first trophy in a long time.

However, when it comes to the way the team are currently playing, it looks like there are no problems out on the field. ESPNFC believe that they have had a very productive pre-season, and the convincing manner of the win against Manchester City further highlights the fact that Arsenal have just picked up from where they left off at the end of last season.

But that does not shroud the fact that Wenger’s squad needs to be bulked up in numbers and quality if they want to challenge for honors this time around, even though they are looking in good shape ahead of the season opener against Aston Villa this weekend. As we near the end of the transfer window, what’s next for Arsenal and Wenger?
