Wenger’s Training Regime Responsible for Szczesny Decline?

The 22-year-old, Wojciech Szczesny, has been the first choice ‘keeper for Arsenal for more than 2 years after impressing in a series of matches back in January 2011. However, he has been criticised for his displays this season and recently lost his place in the side to Lukasz Fabianski.

The Poland international believes that the training ground regime employed at Arsenal is not to his liking, which may have impacted his displays for the Gunners this season.

According to the Daily Mail, Szczesny is frustrated with the training conducted prior to a match and has already voiced his concerns with manager Arsene Wenger. He feels a change in preparations can result in improved performances on the pitch.

It is unclear whether there has been any change in the pattern or style of training employed by Wenger. After breaking onto the scene in early 2011, many Arsenal fans believed that their goalkeeping woes would come to an end. The Gunners have never quite found a first choice goalie who has established himself as the number one since the days of Jens Lehmann, who was a member of the Arsenal’s invincible squad.

But, after nearly two years as first choice goalie, his position is under threat due to some inconsistent performances such as the howler he let in from Villa’s Andreas Weimann from way outside the box in their recent match at the Emirates. Szczesny has now blamed the preparations as the reason for him losing his place to Fabianski.

Arsenal still have faith in the keeper and expect him to recapture his old form sooner rather than later. Wenger stated that his keeper was ‘mentally tired’ when asked about Szczesny’s omission in their crucial Champions League tie away against Bayern Munich.

Szczesny’s contract runs up till 2015 and he will reportedly not discuss a new deal unless it is certain that he is the first choice goalkeeper at Arsenal. And even though Wenger believes Szczesny can get back to his best in the near future, he is on the lookout for a possible replacement, with a bid for Liverpool’s Reina touted.
