Wenger’s Reconstruction Could Start With Williams

This past month was probably what got Wenger thinking. Even though it is a well-known fact that his philosophy on football does not include spending big money on transfers, Arsenal’s manager implied in several of his latest statements that it is time some top quality players landed at the Emirates Stadium. Things seem to fallen right into place with important funds coming the Gunners’ way from both their productive financial management and sponsorship deals. Add to that the fact that apparently some world class players are looking for a change in scenery at the end of the season, and you get the perfect recipe for constructing a group that will win some much sought after trophies.

There are many rumors linking all sorts of players to the North London team. Some say Wenger will invest yet again in young and more affordable footballers while others expect the Frenchman to bring some experienced, world class players to help Arsenal finally end their trophy-less streak.

In recent news it looks like Miguel Michu is not the only Swansea player the Gunners have laid their eyes on. Welsh defender Ashley Williams, who is also captain of his national team, is now named as one of Arsenal’s targets for this summer. Liverpool have also showed some interest, but nothing is set in stone as the player fails to meet the Merseyside team’s owners’ age limit where players should not exceed 26 or 27 years of age. Williams, who is now 28 years old, is valued at around £8 million pounds which has to be very tempting for such a careful spender as Wenger.

It is going to be hard to sign the Wales international, especially after an amazing season as Swansea’s captain. Williams has handled all the top forwards in the Premier League with relative comfort due to his reading of the game and his smart positional sense not to mention his pace. He helped his team win the Capital One Cup and has greatly contributed to keeping his team in the top ten Premier League teams with only about a quarter of the fixtures left until the end of the season.

If all fails and Williams stays with his team for another season, Arsenal have a great alternative in Real’s Spanish defender Raul Albiol. The 27 year old looks like he is out of favor with his team as Varane and Ramos have been on the top of their game all season long. A transfer is highly possible and Arsenal will most definitely place a bid if an opportunity presents itself.
