Wenger Takes A Dig At Rivals

Arsene Wenger has played down city rivals Tottenham Hotspur’s spending spree this transfer window, and has suggested that buying so many players in one go may backfire on the North London side, as they prepare for life without their Welsh star Gareth Bale.

Arsenal’s board and executives made it clear at the start of the window that a large amount of surplus funds would be made available to Wenger to strengthen the squad with players who he believed in. However, despite a big list of targets prepared by Wenger, no senior player has been added to the squad yet as one who could seriously challenge for a starting eleven berth. Arsenal have been active on the deadline days in recent times, securing deals for Mikel Arteta, Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker in the final couple of hours of the January 2012 window so Monday may be the day Wenger uses his trigger finger.

Spurs have been very tactical in their deals so far, and have been one of the top spenders in the league in recent seasons. Manchester City have spent up to £90 million on players like Alvaro Negredo, Stevan Jovetic, Jesus Navas and Fernandinho but Spurs have now taken over as the top spending club in the Barclays Premier League this summer going over the £100million mark. Their buying may not be over yet as other deals are rumored to be in the pipeline to add to the already long list of acquisitions like Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Roberto Soldado, Étienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela.

According to Metro, Wenger said, “In our job, there is a technical risk when you buy more than three players always because you unbalance a little bit the stability of your squad.”

“I know that in England it’s very well seen but it’s always difficult when you bring so many players in, how everybody will do to predict that.”

Well we will see which approach works best but the first blow goes to Arsenal after their solid 1-0 win in the season’s first North London derby on Sunday thanks to the in-form Olivier Giroud’s 1st half winner.
