Wenger Stands Firm On Sagna Contract Issue

Arsenal are set on making some important changes within the team. Wenger will be the initiator of a massive makeover during the summer transfer period. The Frenchman who has been under a lot of stress, especially during the second part of the season, is determined to prove fans and reporters wrong. He has been criticized because of his lack of activity in the transfer market and because it looks like being an 8th year without trophies barring a miracle.

Over the past years Arsenal have lost a lot of important players because of the team’s reluctance to pay top wages to them and the perception by players that the Gunners are not really genuine contenders to win trophies anymore.

It seems like yet another player is on the verge of leaving the Emirates and Wenger is not willing to do anything more to keep him around. In recent news, Sagna expressed his disappointment with the club after being offered only a one year extension to his expiring contract. The French defender, who has been an important part of Arsenal’s team for quite a while now, said that he wants to play for the Gunners but he is not willing to take just any offer.

The club is probably concerned with the fact that Sagna has had a number of serious injuries in the recent past and they are therefore reluctant to offer him a multi-year deal preferring to safeguard themselves by only offering the French defender a 1 year contract extension. Arsenal also seem keen to sign younger players, looking to lower the average age of their team and Sagna is already one of the oldest players at the Emirates.

According to some rumors Wenger has already instructed scouts to search for a replacement for the right back and seemingly Sagna has instructed his representatives to feel out Paris Saint Germain regarding their reported interest in signing him.

You can understand Sagna’s stance as he clearly feels his loyalty to the club should be rewarded with a multi-year deal as there is not a shortage of cash in North London with the £150 million of kit sponsorship money on the way from Emirates and the reported £50 million transfer fund being given to Wenger. It is expected that the French defender will not sign the one year extension and will probably head to France or even Spain to continue his career there.
