Wenger rejects Barcelona in the Premier League

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he does not think Barcelona will play in the Premier League if Catalonia gains independence from Spain.

The current ordeal in Barcelona is obviously not football related, but Catalonia’s sports minister has suggested that Barca could play in the Premier League if they gained independence and were stopped from playing in La Liga.

“Monaco play in France, in England Welsh clubs,” said sports minister Gerard Figueras.

“I don’t think that UEFA has anything against seeing another club play in a different league from their country.”

However, Wenger has insisted that he does not see the club playing anywhere other than in Spain.

When Wenger was asked if he would like to see Barcelona in the Premier League if they were to leave La Liga, the Arsenal boss told beIN SPORTS: “No, because as soon as you disturb the geographical unity or common sense, I believe it would not be normal.”

“Because why not invite Celtic or Rangers to the Premier League, who are part of Great Britain, it makes more sense than to invite Barcelona?”

“On a second level as well, if it doesn’t go well politically between Catalonia and Spain, it would mean a stand of support for Catalonia from England which certainly would not be welcome internationally politically.”

“I don’t believe it is a scenario you can envisage in a realistic way.”

“And I hope as well that it will not go as far and Barcelona can continue to play in Spain.”
