Wenger Opens Up On Lacazette Fee

Arsene Wenger has spoken about new signing Alexandre Lacazette and opened up on smashing the club’s transfer record.

Gunners around the world have been on cloud 9 since the club secured Lacazette on a five-year deal, but he didn’t come cheap. At £53m, the French striker smashed Arsenal’s former transfer record of £42m, a fee that they paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil in 2013.

Wenger has never been one to splash the cash, but as the Premier League becomes richer with more and more sponsorship deals, it is only natural that transfer fees and wages inflate too. English clubs generally have stronger finances than other international sides, meaning they now have to pay more money than ever for players.

Nevertheless, the Arsenal boss is aware of the change in transfer fees in recent times, and accepts that the Lacazette fee is natural.

“For the amount of money that the Premier League spends, it’s linked with the fact that when people know that you have money, they want a lot from you.”

“When people know that you have money, they want a lot from you. That’s just a fact and the consequence of the Premier League being rich. That explains the amount of transfer.” [quotes via Daily Star]

Lacazette gave Arsenal fans a glimpse of what he’s made of when scoring on his debut last week against Sydney FC in a 2-0 pre-season victory, but the Frenchman will need to prove his worth in the Premier League before he can live up to his price tag – something we all know he is capable of.
