Wenger Lining Up Replacements For Vermaelen?

Much has been made about Vermaelen’s possible departure in the January transfer window, given the fact that the Belgian is struggling to break into the first-team and is watching more games as a substitute than being a part of them.

His role on the bench is understandably testing his patience as he is stuck in the wrong situation in the wrong time. With the World Cup coming up next summer, he wants to be playing on a weekly basis to better his chances of making it to the Belgium squad. That does not seem to be happening, as recent reports suggested that he could quit the Gunners if an interesting offer came along.

Vermaelen’s departure is expected sooner rather than later, with Italian side Inter Milan said to be interested. Wenger has foreseen the situation and as a precautionary measure, is already insulating him from the possible loss of the 27-year old. He was thought to be interested in Swansea City’s Ashley Williams in the summer, but no deal took place.

It is expected that Wenger will reignite his interest in him along with adding a new name to the shortlist, that being of West Ham’s Winston Reid, according to Metro. The 25-year old has started the season brightly as he has been very consistent at the back. He is one of the major reasons for the Hammers’ defensive solidity this season.

The giant center-back has been excessively scouted by Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley, who has given a glowing report to Wenger about his performances. Rowley is one of Wenger’s most trusted scouts and the Frenchman is known to trust his judgements when it comes to unearthing such talents.

Also, the interest of the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in him goes a long way in suggesting Reid’s quality. What will be interesting to see in January is will Wenger approach West Ham for their star defender? Will he face competition from Liverpool and United? If yes, then we will definitely have a very interesting transfer story on our hands in the new year.
