Wenger hits out at Man City spending

Arsene Wenger has taken aim at Manchester City over the amount of money they have spent in recent years.

City sit top of the Premier League table, 19 points ahead of the Gunners, and look like they could replicate Wenger’s invincible side.

But the Frenchman has stopped short at praising Guardiola for his achievements, pointing out that it would not be possible if not for all the ‘petrol’ money that they have spent.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Newcastle, he said: “Look, we had no petrol but ideas. They have petrol and ideas, so that makes it more efficient.

“Everybody projects they will last. Everything goes for them inside the games. They have quality to turn it in their favour. They have plenty of resources and quality.”

Wenger was then asked to clarify what he meant with his reference to petrol meant money, and he replied: “Yes. Money and quality, that’s what I wanted to say.

“In their management, in their players, they have everything that’s needed. It’s not easy, you still have to respect that achievement.”

Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Alexandre Lacazette in the summer for around £50m, but City spent more than that on full-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy, twice breaking the transfer record for a defender.

In fact, Guardiola has spent a over £400m on players during the 18 months he has been at the Etihad.
