Wenger Finally Defines Wilshere’s Role

The English international, Jack Wilshere has been a hugely popular figure at the Emirates Stadium and one who enjoys the fans’ unnerving support. Wilshere has been a regular in the England setup as well, operating from the heart of midfield.

However, the 21-year old has also at times been playing just behind the striker as an advanced attacking midfielder, while at times he has also just sat in front of the back four, acting as a holding midfielder. Therefore, no such clarity has been defined for Wilshere’s role in both, Arsenal and England.

There have been some interesting discussions about his ideal position and role in the current Arsenal setup. There are several permutations and combinations which are available for Wenger to explore, given the abundant talent of Arsenal midfielders available at his disposal.

The Gunners are also currently without their key wide players Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Thus, Wenger has taken this opportunity to try Wilshere in several different areas of the pitch. There have been times when he has been deployed out wide on the right hand side of attack, simultaneously he has been asked to play just behind their main striker Olivier Giroud.

More often than not, he is seen sitting just ahead of center backs Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, shielding the back four alongside either Aaron Ramsey of Mikel Arteta; hence Wenger has gone ahead and carved out a niche role for Wilshere in the team – that of being a deep lying play maker.

He seems to have fit into the slot just ahead of the defenders, and he also possesses an attacking flair. Therefore, Wenger feels that the role of a box-to-box midfielders perfectly defines Wilshere.

ESPNFC state that Wenger answered the fans’ questions via the Twitter Takeover gig planned by Arsenal, where he was asked about Wilshere’s ideal position. He replied as saying, “His best position is as a deep-lying midfielder, where he can be a distributor,”

“He has a good burst and vision”

With Wilshere currently bothered by minor injuries despite appearing for England’s loss vs Chile, Arsenal will want their prodigal son back at his best at the earliest possible.
