Wenger Eyes Contract Extensions For His Top Stars

After labouring long and hard in the transfer window, Arsenal delivered on their promise of signing a marquee player by smashing their transfer record in order to bring the German international, Mesut Ozil for a stunning £42.4 million on transfer deadline day.

The financial muscle of the Gunners finally saw light in the end. We knew they had the money, after they offered £40 million for Luis Suarez. But the Ozil signing is a real statement of intent. Arsenal have proved that they are ready to spend big in order to deliver trophies at the club. Having changed their transfer policy of not spending big, can they change their wage structure as well?

According to Dailymail, Wenger is now turning his attention in handing out new contracts for some of the club’s older stars. The likes of Per Mertesacker, Bacary Sagna and Tomas Rosicky are all in line for an extension to their current deals.

While Wenger previously granted only one-year or no new contract for players aged above 30, it seems that even this policy of the Frenchman may become a thing of the past. It seems that the rigid coach has realised experience bodes well for the magnitude of a club like Arsenal, who are competing on all four fronts this season.

Centre-back Mertesacker, who showed supreme form last year, is set for a long-term deal with Wenger being impressed by his form. The 28-year-old German has two years left on his contract, and talks are expected to begin soon to increase the defender’s £80,000-per-week wages.

Czech Republic star Rosicky’s deal expires at the end of the current season and the 32-year-old has shown enough talent over the past season to merit a new contract. While the midfielder has shown tremendous form after numerous injuries, it will be interesting to see how many years extension will he be provided.

Another defender who has been highlighted Wenger for a new deal is Sagna, who was offered a one-year-deal before the current season began. However, the 30-year-old is looking for an increased offer and will reportedly hold out for a two-year deal.

With five players committing themselves to long-term deals last season, will such stability finally end in some silverware for the Gunners?
