Wenger Defines Chambers Role In Squad

Arsene Wenger has spoken at length about Arsenal’s latest signing in defender Callum Chambers, and has suggested that the England youth international’s overall technique is well suited for a potential midfield role, according to Metro.

The Gunners were rampant in their preseason fixture against Benfica in the Emirates Cup, when they ran out 5-1 winners, but they succumbed to French heavyweights Monaco, as a header by Radamel Falcao was enough to seal the win. Arsenal will be playing against Manchester City for the FA Community Shield on 10th August. This fixture will be as important for both sides as it is for the other Barclays Premier League title contenders, as this will be the first indication of the squad quality of both teams.

Chambers made the move to the Emirates Stadium for a reported fee of £12 million. The youngster has been training with the squad and Wenger has praised Chambers’abilities. The manager is already a fan of his technique and mobility, and prefers the 19-year old to play in midfield despite the defence being his position up until now. Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have established their place in central defence, and Chambers could therefore be deployed as a central defensive midfielder, a position that has been vacant since Alex Song’s departure. Although the Community Shield may come too soon, Chambers will surely get a chance to impress during this season.
