Wenger claims Ozil and Sanchez are holding Wilshere back

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Jack Wilshere’s best position is higher up the pitch in the midfield, meaning that Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are preventing him from showing his best stuff.

Wilshere has been impressive so far this season from what we have seen after seemingly overcoming his injury troubles for now. But Arsenal’s new 3-4-3 formation means that there is no role for Wilshere to play in his best position, according to Wenger, with the Frenchman admitting that he is in direct competition for places with the likes of Ozil and Sanchez.

“In my head, he’s more a little bit higher up [the field]. I see him more a player who can affect the game in the final third than a player who is a box-to-box player,” Wenger said ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Red Star Belgrade.

“He’s a little bit in conflict in this position with Ozil and Sanchez. I believe he can as well play in midfield in a 4-2-3-1, he can play midfield in a 4-3-3. In the system we play, I see him a bit more advanced.”

Arsenal have mostly gone with Xhaka and Ramsey in the centre of the pitch, with Wilshere maybe being seen as more attacking than defensive minded.

Either way, it is good to see Wilshere climbing his way back into first team football and getting his name out there for Gareth Southgate who will be soon have to start thinking about who he will pick for his 2018 World Cup squad.
