Welbeck: England can beat anybody!

Arsenal star Danny Welbeck believes that England can hurt any team they play in the World Cup this summer, as they prepare to face Colombia in the knockout stages of the tournament.

The Three Lions finished second in Group G, beating Tunisia and Panama and narrowly losing to Belgium. It has been an impressive tournament so far for Southgate’s men, but that could all change with a slip in performance against teams from now on.

A lot has been said about England’s pathway to the final being a lot more favourable after finishing second than if they had won the group, with a second round victory over Colombia meaning a quarter-final against either Sweden or Switzerland, before a potential semi-final against Russia or Croatia.

However, Welbeck is confident that his side can beat any opponent they face, despite England’s poor knockout record in World Cups in recent years.

“We will do our analysis of Colombia. We know the strengths and weaknesses we will be looking to exploit,” he told Sky Sports News.

“With the players in our squad, we can hurt any opposition.

“With the formation we play, we like to keep possession of the ball but we also like to create opportunities,” he added.

“There has been a lot of talk about set-pieces and getting goals from that but in this tournament a lot of goals have been scored from set-pieces.

“We have created opportunities but maybe we have been fouled in dangerous positions, which is leading to us not getting as many goals from open play.”
