Arsenal and Chelsea have both made aborted attempts to hijack Everton’s move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye, according to reports in France.
The Senegalese international has been locked in negotiations over a potential return to Goodison Park for a number of weeks and it appears the Gunners have tried to persuade the player into making the switch to the Emirates instead.
However, it is believed that Gueye has already given his word that he will sign for Everton. Most supporters on Twitter are relieved that Arsenal failed to secure the 32-year-old’s signature:
We are desparate 😭

Very mid player. I’d rather let Sambi play.

No ambition, thank god we didn’t get him

He is too old now, 5 or 6 years ago i would have loved to have him

Just get Seko Fofana from Lens

Considering the injury suffered by Mohamed Elneny, it is not that surprising that the Gunners considered Gueye as an option. He has Premier League experience and could be brought in on a short-term basis for a reasonable price.
The alternatives, such as Lens’ Seko Fofana, Palmeiras’ Danilo, Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Wolves’ Ruben Neves are expected to be a lot more expensive.
