Waztke Responds To Claims That German World Cup Winner Could Be Leaving For Arsenal

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has denied reports that attacking midfielder Mario Gotze could join Arsenal this summer.

There had been speculation in Germany that the Gunners may put in a bid for the World Cup winner, who has just one year left on his contract at the Bundesliga club.

However, whilst attending the Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham, Watzke was asked about Gotze’s future and he replied:

“I know no reason why he should go.”

Arsenal are likely looking for a replacement for Aaron Ramsey but Gotze is far more comfortable playing further forward in a number 10 role, or even as a centre forward.

Last season, the 26-year-old was a regular first-team player under manager Lucien Favre, scoring seven goals and contributing seven assists in 34 appearances.

Gotze has been struggling with injuries in recent years but he has recovered some of the form that led him to score the winning goal for Germany in the World Cup final back in 2014.
