Veteran Arsenal Defender Reveals Contract Talks Are Under Way

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has confirmed that he is in talks with the Gunners over an extension to his contract at the club.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires at the end of the season and he will be able to talk to foreign clubs in January about a free transfer in the summer.

However, the 32-year-old says he is keen to stay at the Emirates and he has held contract discussions:

“At the moment we are talking with the club. I’ve always said I am really happy, I feel very happy playing for Arsenal. I came six years ago. I have a good relationship with them.”

“We are in contact in any moment so don’t worry about that. I am happy here. That is the most important thing.”

Monreal remains a key player at the club and has started three of new manager Unai Emery’s first four games in charge. He has been at Arsenal for almost six years, having signed from Malaga on deadline day in the 2013 January transfer window for £8.5m.

Since then, he has gone on to make 215 appearances for the club, mostly at left-back, although in the first half of last season, he was used at centre-back as the Gunners used a three-man defence before Arsene Wenger switched to four at the back.
